Gather Your Tools

To begin, you will need good lighting, a full-length mirror, and a handheld mirror. These tools will help you examine your entire body adequately. It’s recommended to perform your skin check monthly, ideally after a shower when your skin is clean and dry.

Head-to-Toe Examination

Start from the top of your head down to your toes. Divide your body into sections, examining each thoroughly. Check your scalp by parting your hair, look behind your ears, and inspect your face and neck. Don’t forget areas like your underarms, palms, and between your toes.

What to Look For

As you conduct your skin examination, keep an eye out for any new growths, moles that have changed color, or spots that look different from others. Use the ABCDE rule:

  • Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other.
  • Border: Edges are irregular or blurred.
  • Color: Multiple colors are present.
  • Diameter: A spot larger than a quarter inch.
  • Evolving: Any changes in size, shape, or color over time.
