Use Sun Protection

One of the best ways to prevent skin cancer is by applying sunscreen. Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen at least half an hour before going outdoors and reapply it according to the directions on the product. We recommend using a sunscreen that’s best for your skin type - cream-based for dry skin and gel-based or non-comedogenic for oily and acne-prone skin.

Minimize Sun Exposure

The second best way to prevent skin cancer is to minimize your sun exposure. The sun’s rays are the strongest between the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. so this is the best time to limit your time outside. However, if you want to be outdoors during these times, try wearing protective clothing, finding shade as often as possible, and wearing sunscreen.

Examine Your Skin

Skin checks done by yourself are a great first step to preventing skin cancer. If you see any new, unusual, or changing spots, this is something to get checked by a dermatologist. These spots can be a growth, mole, spot or sore, or an open sore which could be skin cancer.

Visit a Dermatologist

The best way to prevent skin cancer is to schedule a yearly visit to the dermatologist as they will best be able to diagnose or identify any skin cancers or conditions. If skin cancer is found, a dermatologist will best be able to provide and perform skin cancer treatment.

Skin cancer is a serious concern and we hope these prevention methods help you continue to prevent skin cancer. If you are looking to see a dermatologist, start protecting your skin today by scheduling an appointment at Colorado Skin Surgery and Dermatology!
